Counterparts is an exhibition that brings together the voice of regional artists through explorations of artworks held in Rockhampton Art Gallery’s nationally significant collection.
Rockhampton Art Gallery’s acquisitions disproportionately represent and favour male artists, yet statistics show the demographic of living practitioners primarily consists of women. Counterparts has used the Countess Report (2016) as a principal research source, from which woman art practitioners working in the region have undertaken research internships with Rockhampton Art Gallery. From this experience, the artists have accessed and researched the artworks completed by female artists held within the collection to develop a work of art in response.
In this new light, the art held in Rockhampton Art Gallery's collection completed by artists like Linde Ivimey, Margaret Olley, Del Kathryn Barton, Polexini Papapetrau, Petrina Hicks and Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda (Sally Gabori) will be brought to light by new stories and ideas relevant the political framework of 2019, creating a platform for a variety of voices to contribute to breaking down institutional gender representation.
