Art and Dementia Tours

Second Tuesday of every month, 14 March to 12 December 2017, 10.00am - 11.30pm

In a world grown confusing, overwhelming, and perhaps even frightening, people living with dementia can find comfort by memory arising from visual stimulus. Discussions about the images can tap into memories and lead to an increased sense of well-being and quality of life. Our gallery presenters have been trained through a program conducted by the National Art Gallery and possess specialised knowledge on the effects of dementia, communication techniques and an understanding of the needs of people living with dementia when visiting the Gallery.

Art and Dementia is a monthly structured program that invites people living with dementia and their carers to a 60 minute session with a trained educator using the Gallery’s permanent collection as a vehicle for intellectual engagement.

The Art and Dementia Tours provide small group interactions and social inclusion for local people living with dementia. We use a discussion based tour of 2 - 3 artworks to provide intellectual stimulation with the aim of eliciting enjoyment and allowing participants the opportunity to connect with the world in enriching and life-enhancing ways.

Price: $10 per session [includes 60mins session and tour with qualified dementia educator | cup of tea or coffee | carers complimentary]

Where: Rockhampton Art Gallery, Beatrice Hutton Room (entry via Gallery main entry)

Parking: Victoria Parade or Bolsover Car Park behind the Gallery

About the tutor

Marilyn has been a volunteer for Alzheimer’s Australia (Qld) at the Rockhampton Dementia Support Centre (DSC) for over two years. She participated in the pilot training program for the National Gallery of Australia’s Art and Dementia Program, in conjunction with the Rockhampton Art Gallery, funded by the local DSC. The program had enormous positive reception and outcomes for all involved, particularly for those living with dementia.

Marilyn is excited to have the opportunity to facilitate the Art and Dementia Tours, enabling people living with dementia, and their carers, to experience the normality of a social outing while enjoying the pleasure and stimulation of the visual arts. Her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2000 and died in 2008, so Marilyn understands many of the issues associated with dementia.

She is also a visual artist, so her love of creating and appreciating art helps create a rewarding environment and experience for participants.
