Work with Us Curator
A rare opportunity has become available for a permanent full time Curator to join Council’s team and play an instrumental part in the $31.5 million new Rockhampton Art Gallery. The new Rockhampton Art Gallery will be a place of community and gathering, a place where connections are forged, skills acquired, a love of art nurtured and history celebrated. It is posited to be the kitchen of Rockhampton – a place where activity, creative fun, experiment and sharing occur; a place for accidental discovery and learning. We invite congregation and contribution while acknowledging the culture and heritage of the region.
The Quay Street Cultural Precinct project is one of six key catalyst projects in the Rockhampton CBD Redevelopment Framework. The project’s main objective is to create a vibrant cultural hub and an active community space in the CBD around the historic Customs House. The vibrant new Gallery will boast collection galleries to exhibit the permanent collection works, including those of the “Greats” of Australian modernist painters, including artists Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Russell Drysdale, Charles Blackman, John Brack and Jeffrey Smart.
This once in a career opportunity will situate you as an integral part of the team in the design, development and construction phases of the new Rockhampton Art Gallery. Working alongside the Gallery Director you will set the vision and thinking as Rockhampton Art Gallery repositions itself as a place of community, gathering, and connections; for the acquisition of skills, love of art and celebration of history. The Gallery exhibition program will be an all-encompassing contemporary art experience that balances international touring exhibitions with deep connections to the surrounding regional area and cultural identity.
You will lead the Exhibition and Curatorial team, and with them, you will research and develop the exhibition program and participatory experiences across curated exhibitions, and inbound and outbound touring. You will oversee the development, growth and conservation of the Rockhampton Art Gallery collection in consultation with the Director. Within this role, you will be responsible for the care, preservation and interpretation of the Gallery’s nationally significant collection. To support this you will seek funding, prepare budgets and reports for the collection program. In line with the relocation to the new site you will lead the 100% collection relocation, and new collection design and fitout.
Your highly developed communication and interpersonal skills will ensure your success in negotiating copyright, loans, and commissions for the exhibitions and collections programs. With strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills, you will have the ability to coordinate and monitor work activities of Exhibition and Curatorial team, and act in the role of Gallery Director when required. To ensure the Gallery meets the required objectives and standards you will be required to have extensive knowledge of Australian art history and practice.
You will be required to have tertiary qualifications in Art History, Museum Studies or other relevant arts-related fields and substantial experience within an art gallery or museum environment. This position requires a positive Blue Card (working with children check).
This position requires the completion of a satisfactory Criminal History Check - Police Certificate (Australia Wide Name Only Police Check).
