Fantastic Worlds brings together the work of eleven contemporary Australian sculptors, who each pose new and strange possibilities the world around us. Artists using non-traditional mediums such as balloons and balsa wood include Todd Robinson, and Amy Joy Watson, whose individual pieces each present alternative forms for interpreting our world.

Kate Rohde’s stalagmite-inspired creations made of resin are altogether other-worldly and Lionel Bawden’s pencil sculptures echo the forms of geographic modelling. The fictional and fantastic are explored in work by Linde Ivimey, and so too with Troy Emery, who uses household craft or cleaning materials to create lurid-coloured, fluffy animals.

Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro’s use of Lego and furniture responds to the human impulse to alter and control the environment, as does Caroline Rothwell’s sculptures of hybrid species. Nicholas Folland presents crystals and taxidermy to contemplate our interaction between the domestic and the natural worlds, while Julia deVille uses jewels and taxidermy to present a contemporary memento mori.
