Rockhampton Art Gallery was established in 1967 and houses the finest collection of mid-twentieth century Australian art in regional Queensland. Predominantly acquired through sponsorship and benefaction, the collection has grown to represent a cross-section of Central Queensland interests and influences: modern and contemporary Australian and Aboriginal art, Japanese and British art plus artworks and artefacts of the Central Queensland region.
The development of this collection reflects a history of civic pride and generosity from residents of the Rockhampton region. Today, the Gallery wishes to honour this tradition and is committed to re-invigorating a collecting focus on modern and contemporary Australian art.
The introduction of the Gold Award, a biennial acquisitive art prize worth $50,000, has contributed significantly towards achieving this vision. The Rockhampton Art Gallery Philanthropy Board also administers the Bayton Award, a non-acquisitive prize worth $5,000 for Central Queensland residents.
The Gallery’s collection continues to grow through the support of Rockhampton Art Gallery Philanthropy Board, Friends of Rockhampton Art Gallery, and Rockhampton Regional Council, but also generous corporate sponsorship and the support of our vibrant arts community.
